CWLR presented the Women’s Resource Right Agenda (WRRA) and contributed to drawing up action plans for future work on women and land rights at the Uttaranchal Forum for Women, Land and Resource Rights Meeting from 26th to 27th May 2006. People associated with various NGOs working in the field of women and land rights came together to share their experiences at this meeting.

The two day meeting was organized by Prayas with the support of Action Aid, Uttar Pradesh. Presentations were made on important issues concerned with women’s access to and control over land rights and six monthly action plans as well as the organizations responsible for them were decided for each issue. It was agreed that Janadesh would coordinate the next meeting in July for the Garhwal groups.

Ms. Tanushree Verma (Sathi all for partnerships) represented CWLR at the Uttaranchal Forum Meeting. She facilitated a session, which involved a discussion on what is commonly understood by the term ‘women’s rights’, what hurdles exist in accessing these rights and the probable solutions to overcoming these hurdles. The session evoked a good response from those present. There was a consensus on the need to bring about a change in the attitude of society, family and women themselves through well planned campaigns. The need for developing women’s capacity to claim their land and resource rights through training and exposure programs was also stressed upon.

Ms. Verma also made a presentation on the steps drafted by CWLR for implementing a WRRA and ensuring legal entitlement of land and resource rights in the name of women. CWLR received excellent feedback on its presentation from the group. It received valuable suggestions for improving the applicability of the steps to implement a WRRA in the specific context of Uttaranchal.

A report on the Uttaranchal Forum for Women Land and Resource Rights Meeting has been uploaded under the reports section of the CWLR website.
